More about Breast Augmentation Surgery

More than 300,000 breast augmentation procedures are performed each year, making it one of the most common cosmetic procedures. Women may pursue breast augmentation for a variety of reasons, including to increase their breast size, restore lost volume after pregnancy or weight fluctuations, or to correct asymmetry in the breasts. In addition, some women may opt for breast augmentation in conjunction with a breast lift to restore a more youthful appearance to their breasts as they age. Some of the benefits of breast augmentation include:

  • More proportionate figure
  • Increased clothing options
  • Enhanced self-confidence

Candidates for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery is appropriate for women who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts. The procedure is most common among women between the ages of 18 and 34, but is also increasingly popular among women ages 35 to 50 who are unhappy with changes in the breasts that have come about as a result of aging and pregnancy. Dr. Lee Corbett performs a thorough evaluation of all potential breast augmentation Louisville patients to determine if they are candidates for the procedure. During this appointment he takes a number of factors into account, including the patient’s health history and cosmetic goals. By gaining a thorough understanding of these issues, Dr. Corbett is able to provide customized treatment plans that will get patients the results they desire.

While there are no strict age requirements for breast augmentation, most patients wait until age 18, but each circumstance is treated individually. The FDA approved silicone breast implants for women 22 and older. This does not mean a woman under 22 cannot have silicone implants, it simply represents what his known as an “off-label” use. Dr. Corbett will explain this more thoroughly at your consultation if applicable. Breast augmentation is not appropriate for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. In addition, breast augmentation patients should not smoke. It is important that patients disclose all health conditions and current medications to Dr. Corbett so he can ensure safety throughout the breast augmentation procedure and recovery.

The Procedure

Dr. Corbett performs breast augmentation at a state-of-the-art outpatient surgical center. Patients who undergo the procedure are free to begin recovery in the comfort of their own home. During the procedure, Dr. Corbett will make an incision either around the areola, under the breast or in the arm pit. He then places the breast implant either under the muscle of the chest wall or behind the breast itself. For patients who receive silicone breast implants, Dr. Corbett uses the Keller Funnel™, a revolutionary surgical tool which enables a “no-touch” implantation. The use of the Keller Funnel™ also significantly reduces the risk of infection or capsular contracture. During a comprehensive consultation, a number of decisions are made about surgery, including the type of breast implant to be used, the location of the incisions and the placement of the implant. Once the implant has been placed, incisions are closed with sutures. The entire breast augmentation procedure can be completed in about 30 minutes.

Recovering from Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia, and as such, patients may experience grogginess or mild nausea after the procedure. Patients should arrange for someone to drive them home and care for them in the 24 hours after surgery. An overnight stay is available to those who prefer this option. Frequently we request that our out-of-town patients stay overnight in a local hotel. Patients will experience some minor swelling, bruising and discomfort in the days after the procedure. Most patients can resume routine activities, including work, within 5-7 days. More strenuous activity, such as exercise or heavy lifting, should be avoided for several weeks. Dr. Corbett and his staff are available around the clock to address any questions or concerns that may arise. In addition, Dr. Corbett sees patients for three post-surgical appointments to monitor recovery. Learn more about breast augmentation recovery.
